- What is a semester abroad?
A semester abroad is an opportunity to study at one of GUtech’s partner universities in Europe.
- Why study abroad?
Studying a semester abroad during your bachelor studies is a fantastic opportunity to acquire new skills, and to meet new people from all around the world. There are many reasons and benefits to study abroad, such as:
- Learning to live independently in a different culture and society
- Developing intercultural competencies
- Getting insights into a different learning environment
- Experiencing another life style
- Connecting with people from different countries / cultures (networking)
- Improving your language skills
- Making your CV unique
- Am I eligible to study abroad?
The semester abroad opportunity is generally open to students who have:
- completed at least 2 years of study at the Bachelor level
- passed at least Germ 2 with an average grade C
- no disciplinary record
- achieved minimum cGPA
- achieved 6.0 score in IELTS or equivalent

- How to choose the right institution for pursuing completing a semester abroad?
- 1 Make your planSince going abroad is a new challenge and big decision, it will be very important to discuss your plans with your parents, before you decide to apply for a semester abroad. And discuss this with your academic advisor as well.
- 2. Begin your researchResearch exchange opportunities and collect as much information as possible about your preferred destination using materials available in MyGUtech. Discuss opportunities with your academic advisor and get your learning agreement signed.
- 3. Prepare all documents for the host institutionEach host institution has got its own requirements. You will have to find out about all documents needed to complete the application and get them ready before starting the application process. Required documents can be founded at Host University’s website.
- How to apply?
Step I: Get nominated by GUtech by following these steps:
- Fill in this application form
- Upload through the form these documents:
- Application to the international office at GUtech
- Signed Learning Agreement
- Passport scan
- Transcript of records
- IELTS 6.0 or equivalent
- Signed Parental consent
- Include all documents listed on the host institution’s website
Step II: Get a notification to apply to the host institution
After completing ‘Step I’, your application will be reviewed by the IO at GUtech. If eligible, you will receive a confirmation on nomination. This means that you will have to start the application process at the host institution.
Step III: Appy to the host institution
Application to the host University
Deadline and application process will vary depending on host institution. Based on the nomination, you will be contacted directly by the host university and receive information about the further procedure (application, housing, course registration etc.).
- Many will send you the link to apply after you have been nominated.
- Some will also ask you to apply for student housing at the same time.
*Note: please ensure to you submit your application at the host university by the deadline and checking your email inbox and spam folder regularly is your responsibility to ensure receiving important information from the host university.
- After you get nominated:
- Register at host institution and GUtech during registration period
You are required to not only to register for courses at the host university, but at GUtech as well. Equivalent courses listed in your learning agreement, which you intend to take at the host institution, has to be registered at GUtech during the registration period.
*Note: Any changes in your learning agreement has to be discussed and approved by your academic advisor & the head of the department.
- Attend a pre-departure workshop
Before leaving Oman, all Outgoing Exchange Students will have to attend a Pre-Departure Workshop organized by GUtech international Office.
- Plan for your travel:
Ensure preparing for your travel enough time before your travel date including the following:
- Get your Visa:
Ensure preparing required documents in order to apply for your visa enough time perior your travel. In order to avoid any delay, please consider the following:
- Apply at least 4 weeks before your planned departure.
- Make an appointment at German Embassy’s website, please make your appointment early!
- Print your appointment
- Prepare all visa requirements (please check German Embassy’s website).
- Please prepare the documents carefully according to the list of required documents as an incomplete applications can generally not be processed by the Embassy.
All information about visa are available in German Embassy’s website, please make sure to read all information carefully. If you need any help, please don’t hesitate to contact GUtech international office or the German embassy to help you!
- Get your Health Insurance:
You have to arrange for your own health insurance. You can book a health insurance from Oman which covers your stay in Germany or have a German health insurance in Germany (Public or Private). You should receive information about health insurance from the international office of the host institution. If you haven’t received any, please don’t hesitate to contact them to ask about this or get a help from the international office at GUtech.
- Book your Accommodation:
Accommodation is usually guaranteed for all international exchange students. The host institution usually provides students with information about accommodation and guide them through the booking procedure. If you haven’t received information about accommodation, please don’t hesitate to contact them to ask about this or get a help from the international office at GUtech.
- Sufficient finances:
All outgoing exchange students have to pay their regular tuition fee at GUtech. Please make sure to have enough money to cover your travel and living expenses for your study abroad. You should estimate approximate monthly expenses of around 850 -100 EUR depending on the city which you are going to choose and your life style.
Keep in mind the following when calculating costs:
- Books and/or photocopies
- Travel / transportation
- Housing / accommodation
- Living: food, leisure, travel…
- Visa cost
- Insurance cost
- Health checkup (if required)
- Travel:
Once you have booked your flight, please remember to inform the host institution about your arrival time and date in order to arrange for your arrival. Some universities offer a special programme for international students, titled “Buddy Programme”, which you can apply for in advance. If you haven’t received any information about buddy programme and you need someone to take you from the airport to the accommodation, please ask the host institution to assist you. Please remember to stay in touch with the international office of the host university.

- Study abroad
During the exchange semester, students will act as an ambassador of GUtech. Students support in promoting GUtech is much appreciated. Stay in touch with the international office of the host university, your academic advisor for any academic questions and the international office at GUtech is supporting you during your time abroad with any special issues.
- After termination of the exchange semester
- Transfer of ECTS credits
After the termination of the exchange semester students will have to send your Transcript of Records (ToR) from abroad to the International Office at GUtech. It will then be compared with the «Learning agreement» which you have sent to GUtech international office. The credits achieved abroad and stipulated in the Agreement will be acknowledged and stated in GUtech’s ToR.
- Report:
Once you come back, become an ambassador for Study Abroad and you will be requested to submit a Study Abroad Report within 1 month of return to share your enrich experience.
Additionally some students will be invited to the Study Abroad information session of the next semester, in order to share experiences with interested future outgoing students.

The websites of our partner universities contain detailed information such as module offers, location of the university, etc. Students will find direct links to the websites of all our partner universities on opportunities overview.
- Information Event
The International Office organises the Study Abroad Fair once every
academic year. The fair offers students the opportunity to ask questions and to get in contact with former outgoing students as well as current incoming students. Since organising a semester abroad takes some time, the International Office recommends students to attend the fair at the beginning of their study programme in order to have enough time for research.
- Support from GUtech international office:
International Office supports outgoing students in the following areas:
- Informing students about options to study abroad
- Providing information and procedures in terms of planning a semester abroad
- Provide help for outgoing questions with any logistic questions, such as: Visa application.
- Nominating applicants to our partner institutions
- Supporting outgoing students during their planning time and during their time abroad with special issues
